Tonya Combest Receives Memorial Scholarship Award

Monday, July 25, 2011

FDLIC would like to congratulate Tonya Combest of Combest Family Funeral Homes in Lubbock, Idalou, Tahoka and O'Donnell, Texas, on receiving the FDLIC Memorial Scholarship.

Tonya has lived and breathed funeral service for nearly 17 years, and as the wife of a funeral director, she has found a calling in serving families, listening to their stories, and offering comfort and support during a trying time.

"We read in the Bible about washing the feet of others and bearing other people's burdens," Tonya said. "But to actually become involved and feel people's hurts and fulfill those needs in their most difficult hour is what I believe servanthood and funeral service is all about. I know this is God’s plan for my life, and I don't want to get in the way. I want to follow His leading so that He can fulfill the promises He has in store for me."

Tonya has decided that it is time to earn her funeral director's license so that she can work at the funeral home and carry on her husband's legacy should something happen to him at a young age. Tonya will be attending Amarillo College in the fall and working to become a licensed funeral director.

"Funeral service has taught me many lessons," Tonya said. "When reflecting on the funeral profession, the words history, heritage and service come to mind. History sets the stage for things past, present and events yet to come. Heritage imparts a lineage of values. Service represents the benevolence and respect that is given, not earned. What a privilege and great honor to be a recipient of the FDLIC Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship represents the history of those before me, the heritage that lingers on, and the service that endures. Thank you for allowing me to be part of the years to come."
