FDLIC Relay for Life Team Raises $4,944

Wednesday, May 18, 2011

The 2011 Relay for Life took place in FDLIC's hometown, Abilene, TX, on April 29th through the 30th, 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. As usual, FDLIC was able to send a great team of volunteers to support the cause.

"What an amazing turnout we had at Relay this year!" said team leader Alvino Sanchez (Fulfillment). "Angie Dobbs (Customer Service) and I would like to thank everyone for being there and making it one of our most successful events to date!"

The local Abilene Relay as a whole raised over $112,000 that will go to the American Cancer Society. "This was our biggest year yet," commented Alvino. "We had more teams and participants, more survivors, more fun...and more wind! Speaking of which, I'd like to thank all of our team members for hanging in there and toughing out the wind!! We are so thankful to our hard working team for all that they contributed...and thanks to our great company FDLIC for matching our employees' donations to the American Cancer Society."

FDLIC treated the entire team with breakfast at the Abilene Country Club immediately following the Relay. The FDLIC team did very well this year, receiving The Most Spirited Team award and placing second in The Most Laps by a Team. "Everyone on the FDLIC team did an amazing job, and we are very grateful to them! We are creating a world with more birthdays, thanks to them!" said Alvino. In total, the FDLIC team raised $4,944 including the company match. "We came in fifth place overall in total money raised," Alvino added.

Gloria Emmert (New Business), one of FDLIC's most dedicated Helpers of People, was sad to have missed this year's event, but especially thankful for her co-workers' and the company's efforts. "I missed the Relay for Life this year because my husband, John, is fighting cancer as we speak and can no longer be left alone," said Gloria. "This is a horrible disease and there is no cure for the type of cancer John has. It is so important to find a cure and wipe this ugly disease off the face of the earth. If you've ever lost a loved one you know of what I speak. Early detection can save lives in many cancers. Your money for research saves lives, that's why the Relay for Life is so important. My personal thanks to everyone who participates and to Alvino for heading it up and for making it happen and to Kris and FDLIC for allowing us to support the Cancer Society and well as many other charities."
